One of the things I love about this program is being able to network with fellow students and current teachers to get or “steal” teaching ideas for future purposes. I’ve already acquired a lot of good ideas and I’m hungry for more. And its been suggested by teachers to do so that’s the awesome thing, they encourage it. I highly recommend it as well. There is already a few of my fellow students that I know I will going to for advice or ideas just because they are already ahead of the game as for as knowledge and skill.
On Tuesday my group and I taught 6th graders. We taught them the design process and applied it to technology systems and concepts as well as helping them think creatively and innovatively. It was a great experience. I won’t ever be teaching students that young and I’m kind of sad about that, because these kids were really fun to work with. They loved our activities and for the most part were fully engaged in all the things we had planned for them. In retrospect we should have explained certain aspect more fully as well as emphasized the technology aspect of our lesson plan. But over all it went well. I realized how important it was to have them work together and have some serious teamwork. I noticed that there was a lot of prompting on our part as to what to do next and encouraging communication between them. I wish I had a moment to talk to them all and make it clear that technology isn’t just about one person. There are many great technological advancements that involved multiple people brainstorming and building off each other’s ideas. As well as pointing out that past inventions lead to present inventions this is how technology evolves.
I enjoy teaching youth. They are so much more willing to learn new things. There are so many things that they have yet to learn and we as teachers get to be apart of that. Teachers speak of the joy that comes from a student learning something new and having the opportunity to be apart of that process. I’ve experience similar joy and after being with these 6th graders I’m even more excited to be apart of that process.
