Where it all comes together

There are a lot things across the web that I want to remember or collect or things that I want to reference at a later date; So this is where it all comes together. Its my all-in-one multimedia journal. There isn't a rhyme or reason to it, its just whatever I think is cool, funny, interesting and admirable.

Love the Subject and Not the Paycheck

I have found that it doesn’t just take great knowledge of a subject to be a good teacher, it takes a love of the subject as well. I had a great deal of knowledge for the subject matter that I taught about but I wasn’t in love with it. When we love what we’re teaching it shows, that enthusiasm becomes contagious and the student naturally is won over. When you have a love of the subject matter you have a greater desire for the student to really ‘get it’ and not just briefly retain information. I’m excited to teach about something that I love. I would guess though that a good teacher can take any subject and teach the crap out of it.
When we observed this week it was bad timing. It was a testing day for them so not much teaching was going on. There were a few teaching moments but mainly we just talked to the teacher about his field of teaching and how rewarding this occupation can be. “You won’t be rich, but you’ll be happy” is what this teacher said to us aspiring teachers and I’ll always remember that.

Even though there were only a few teaching moments to witness I’m glad I saw them. This teacher was really good. I liked how when a student did a question he led them to the answer, and didn’t just give them the answer. This helped them see the logic in the problem.

As I’m going through a program to become a teacher its good to be surrounded by good teachers, so as to observe them and get some great ideas. There were a few things that I noticed my teachers doing with their curriculum that I liked very much and want to employ in my own classroom management system.
- Late assignments are accepted at anytime but 10% of the final score of the assignment is deducted.
- Tests are handed back after being graded for the students to rework the questions they missed for half credit
- You can obtain extra credit when you do more with a given assignment, showing that you have built on what you already know, and stretching yourself and your abilities.

I look to both Dr. Wright and Dr. Shumway as benevolent dictators, in so many ways I want to follow in their footsteps.
